A rigorous live: Vadim Glowna dead at 70

German actor Vadim Glowna, a regular in film and television drama who was also a successful director and screenwriter, has died after a short illness. He was 70.

Glowna,well known for his soft, rough voice, was rarely the leading man but he shined in supporting roles, among them performances in Chris Kraus’ Four Minutes (2006) and Oskar Roheler’s No Where To Go (2000), both of which won German Film Awards for best film of the year. His one major international production was in Sam Peckinpah’s WWII drama Cross of Iron (1977) alongside James Coburn and Maximilian Schell.

A multi-talent, Glowna won the golden camera honor at the Cannes film festival for his directorial debut Desperado City in 1981. His sophomore effort, Dies rigorose Leben, won an honorable mention at the Berlin film festival in 1983. He also helmed dozens of episodes of German TV drama. Glowna was married to the Russian actress Vera Tschechowa from 1967 until the late 1980s. Glowna’s last performance was as Jorge Da Costa in Tom Fontana’s bad pope series Borgia.

Finally, Jim Avignon aka Neoangin is back in Berlin and is giving one of his great shows at our new venue for 2012, the one and only Naherholung Sternchen. David Chazam will be supporting him.

Jim Avignon (born 24 December. 1966 in Munich) is a contemporary German pop artist and representatives of the art modeste, designer and musician. A respected cult figure in the art and Techno subculture in Berlin, he currently lives and works both in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and in Berlin.

David Chazam is a french omnidirectional composer born in 68, based in Brussel, who works in different musical and show paradigms like: contemporary dance, boring theater, interesting movies, radio drama creation, improvised music and uncomplexed electropoppy punk music in wild clubs.

And after these 2 great shows enjoy the smooth minimal-sound of Cetin Sahin (Berliner Hoervergnuegen).

The Wonders of the World stopped at seven; DL is going one better at eight. [DL8], the 8th Berlin International Directors Lounge Experimental Film Festival, is hitting Berlin in a new vein and venue, this year making the up-and-comer insider tip Naherholung Sternchen its stomping ground.

The reason for the move will be clear to all once they hit the doors, literally a stone’s throw from the iconic Kino International near Alexanderplatz: the location, a one-time thespians’ hangout already steeped in its own history, has clearly been waiting for this moment. This place wants to be, and [DL8] is the ticket make it happen.

There will be people you know and wish you did, performers, filmmakers and films, films, films, make no mistake – what you haven’t seen, what you don’t get to see, films not normed for consumption by the broad masses, but films of this length and that, free of clichés and predictable endings, free of everything you don’t need to see yet again.

How can we make it work? Bucketloads of dedication.
How can you miss it? There’s the question with only one answer. You can’t. Don’t. 1001 nights at the cinema, all in eleven days, films like you forgot or maybe never knew they could be made, films that will change the colour of your eyes and thoughts… on-beat, offbeat and everything between.

Conveniently run parallel to that other media extravaganza down at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, but free of red carpets and frozen celebs. Photo-ops only if and when you make them.

StadtRaum – Urban Space Double Feature

Two films, two film essays about public space. One is based on performances including public interventions on urban plazas in Hannover and the second film explores encounters in public space in Gropiusstadt, a modernist residential area in the South of Berlin. Both films bring forward issues of public space and urban development: Will public space disappear under the changes of globalization and the development of an electronic public sphere? Are there new meanings and new functions of urban public space that could reactivate public space also in urban areas outside of the historic center of cities? Do we still need public places, or urban community space in the larger metropolitan areas?
Both films developed from visual researches in the respective urban areas and may be best described as visual essays.

Klaus W. Eisenlohr is a lecturer at Photocentrum Kreuzberg and at Lexia International in Berlin. His media are photography, film and new media. Johann Zeitler mainly works with painting, performance and drawing. Both artist have collaborated on urban and film projects since 2003.

In this 11th edition of the International Competition Confrontations, expect to see another memorable compilation that unites themes of social and world political importance in three programmes of extraordinary short fiction films and animations. Social injustice, intolerance, violence, war, exploitation and migration are just some of the themes that confront us every day in the media. Despite, or perhaps because of the constant onslaught of these and other complex topics, they run the risk of becoming outworn expressions that conceal the real consequences facing the individual.

The aim of the Confrontations competition is to fill these empty phrases with stories that convey a sense of relatedness, confront us with their authenticity and call for our empathy. Themes explored in this year’s programmes include people on the margins of society, everyday heroes, border crossers, refugees and those whose lives are dominated by external influences.

We’re pleased to announce that this year’s Confrontations Competition is supported by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future”.

Well-known Iranian director, Jafar Panahi, whose second-last film The Accordion will be shown in Confrontations, has been banned from his profession for 20 years and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. This was confirmed by the Iranian government shortly before going to press. We vehemently condemn the fact that the work of an independent filmmaker can lead to the total loss of his/her freedom.

THIRTY FRAMES A SECOND, TWO HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR
DIRECTORS LOUNGE’S GUY MADDIN SHORTS HEADING FOR ESSEN

No longer an upstart after seven consecutive years and scads of films of every conceivable genre, the Berlin International Directors Lounge (DL to the initiated) is still free of formula, corralling batches of like-minded works into presentable groupings but not bowing to predictability. No one knows quite what they are going to see here. That viewers can move freely about, mounting stairs and draping themselves over balcony railings to take in what’s splashed onto the screen may add to the slightly helter-skelter atmosphere. Question-and-answer sessions with selected directors and performers can prove as offbeat as some of the offerings, and left field live performances take it over the top. For free. There is nothing else like this in Berlin, one of the hardest claims you can make in this city. DL, while still arriving, has arrived. Renowned artists such as Michael Nyman have chosen to reveal their newest visions here, and films are being sent for consideration by the hundreds from all over the globe, with their creators and stars often enough making the trip to see how it looks up there, larger than life. Add to that fast-appearing online reviews of films and audience reaction, and you’ve got the makings of a cult carnival waiting to be reborn on a yearly basis, like a child who enjoyed the process enough to want to give it yet another go.
It had to happen that Berlin’s DL and Winnipeg’s enfant bizarre Guy Maddin would come together, and this year marked the time, when the Berlinale jury member brought a handful of his short features to form the backbone of an evening dedicated to his peculiar view of things, as seen through the (filmic) eyes of the influenced, heard via live readings from his enigmatic book From The Atelier Tovar and not least declared by way of the master’s aforementioned shorts themselves. A bit of everything was there. The giddy tomfoolery of Nude Caboose, the frenetic, fetishistic mock-punishment of Sissy Boy Slap Party, the industrial expressionism of The Heart Of The World. The house was full and imagination running at full tilt.
Directors Lounge is, with Mr. Maddin’s blessing, showing these tasty celluloid morsels at C.A.R. in Essen, offering up a peak into many little worlds portrayed in a myriad of ways: playful, distressing, subtle, haunting, head-on. Maddin comes to DL comes to you, and you only need eyes and ears to make it work.

Travelling Practice

Digital video works by Steven Ball 2003 – 2010. These works travel near and far, across physical and virtual space using material collected en route. Travel determines form, subject and object are fluid entities, digital experimentation becomes landscape study, hyperlocal excursion, and experimental documentary, as they explore and exhaust species of spaces and media.

Steven Ball has worked in film, video, sound and installation since the early 1980s. In the late 1980s he accidentally migrated to Melbourne, Australia. There he continued his practice making a number of film, video and sound and installation works, as well as being engaged in various curatorial, administrative, teaching and writing activities.
